A Shelter Sketchbook, by John S. Taylor

Shelter Sketchbook: Timeless Building Solutions
Shelter Sketchbook: Timeless Building Solutions

A fun book, as well as instructive. The following synopsis is from Alibris:

About this title: This book reminds us that most of what we need to know is simply what we've already forgotten. John Taylor's trained eye and skilled hand celebrate details of: -- Thousand-year-old earth-sheltered houses in China -- Passive solar heating designs of the Pueblo Indians -- natural air conditioning systems built in the Middle East. -- Modular building techniques used in Japan 500 years ago This is a book for builders, students, and anyone seeking stimulation for the imagination. Author and architect John Taylor's exacting eye, intricate sketches, and hand-written notes are gentle reminders that observation, even more than technology, is the best source of innovation.

I especially like the natural air conditioning systems. I sometimes wonder why we don't have more regionalized architecture that is designed to cope with local climate instead of plunking down similar structures everywhere and then designing equipment to make them more liveable.

As of this posting, the book seems to have gone out of print but several places still had new copies as remainders.
