Why Buildings Stand Up, by Mario Salvadori

Why Buildings Stand up: The Strength of Architecture
Why Buildings Stand up: The Strength of Architecture

This book provides a good overview for laymen. We've had it in the store, and I think it's quite readable. (I also think it's quite interesting, but I'm one of those people who happily watches documentaries on bridges and tunnels and dam building and what have you.)

From the publisher (via Barnes & Noble):

Between a nomad's tent and the Sears Tower lies a revolution in technology, materials, and structures. Here is a clear and enthusiastic introduction to building methods from ancient times to the present day, including recent advances in science and technology that have had important effects on the planning and construction of buildings: improved materials (steel, concrete, plastics), progress in antiseismic designs, and the revolutionary changes in both architectural and structural design made possible by the computer.
