To mark World Book Day, book clubs in the UK (I think from the context they mean reading groups as opposed to those publishing outfits for genre enthusiasts) were asked to nominate favorite books, and people were then asked to vote from the resulting short list of 50 'popular' books. About 13,000 votes later, the results are in.
It's not the list I would have made (I'd say from what I've picked up in reviews, or know of previous books by some of these authors, that no one was overly concerned with what is suitable for mixed company), but, well, at least when they asked author Jenny Colgan what she thought, she saved her highest praise for Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, number four on the list and the only classic.
Some of the attached commentary sent in by people who were complaining that their favorite book wasn't on the list is interesting, even fun.
