There was an earthquake off northern California this evening which was large enough to trigger tsunami warnings and watches along the west coast of the United States and Canada. The tsunami warning has now been called off, and it looks like everybody's lucked out. (Whew.)
The title link is to a USGS website that marks earthquakes as they happen, and maintains a map of quakes that have happened in the last week. It has links to tsunami bulletins and sometimes to news stories, so it's a pretty good basic resource for this sort of potential emergency.

Thanks for visiting my blog.
Even though the tsunami alert was cancelled on the radio, our TV warning system continued to issue the alert for another 30 minutes, until about 9:40PM. Though we live far enough inland to be safe, we would have left if an evacuation was ordered.
We've had a couple of power outtages, the latest at 3AM. I don't know yet if they were related to the earthquakes and aftershocks. I haven't read anything more.
Will keep watch.

Best of luck re: aftershocks, etc., and thanks again for being on the ball with your warning on your blog.
I live way inland, so don't have anything to fear from tsunamis - but when there is a tsunami I'd like to see as many people saved as possible, of course.
In some ways I think blogs have taken on the same role that ham radio used to cover by itself. I think we still need the hams, but with blogs we can get the word out fast to anybody paying attention on the internet. (If we're paying attention ourselves, and yesterday I wasn't, as it happens...)
