Book to Watch: The Last Voyage of Columbus, by Martin Dugard

I haven't had a chance to read this yet, but my husband has just finished reading the Advance Reading Copy of The Last Voyage of Columbus: Being the Epic Tale of the Great Captain's Fourth Expedition, Including Accounts of Swordfight, Mutiny, Shipwreck, Gold, War, Hurricane, and Discovery (how's that for a subtitle!), by Martin Dugard, due to come out in June from Little, Brown, and on Time Warner Audiobooks.

He says it's a good read: a little graphic in places, but within context - i.e., the rough stuff is integral to the story and not out of bounds.

And, hurrah, it sounds like Columbus gets treated as a real guy, instead of either a whipping boy for modern sophisticates on the one hand or a gooey goody-two-shoes on the other.

Dugard is the New York Times bestselling author of several other nonfiction books, including Farther Than Any Man: The Rise and Fall of Captain James Cook, Knockdown, Surviving the Toughest Race on Earth, and Into Africa: The Epic Adventure of Stanley and Livingston. He has also written for Esquire, Outside, Sports Illustrated, and GQ.

The hardcover ISBN is 0316828831.
