What would probably have happened today is the Koufax, rather than taking a personal stand (and making a personal sacrifice), would have demanded that the entire baseball league not play on that day. And when the League ignored that request, he would have gone to an attorney and sued the League.
Nowadays, no one makes personal sacrifices. Everyone demands that sacrifices be spread out amongst our entire society. Egalitarian to the point of idiotic, that's what we are.
Having said all that, it was a beautiful thing Koufax did.
