When I was growing up, one of my neighbors was an earthquake survivor. She was about 6 or 7 when the quake hit, and had vivid memories of both the quake (the family's chimney collapsed) and the fire afterwards. She said the sky was so bright at night, you could read a newspaper without any light. One of the ways to remember the earthquake is to see that great old movie "San Francisco," which was made only 30 years after the quake hit.
