We have a saying in this part of the world, that talking to someone "is like talking to a fence post." In other words, he might as well not have ears since he doesn't seem to hear what other people say. OK, admittedly, in less charitable moments and applications, it also is a way of saying someone seems to have no more brains than a fence post - but nicer people try not to use it that way. In any case, it means that it's almost impossible to hold a conversation with the person.
This post featuring a passage from a Shirley Jackson book definitely made me think of it.
